DANCE SCHOOL

ELITE DANCE PROGRAM

welcome to yfdc dance school
located in largs, Hinton, East Maitland & thornton

At Your First Dance Co., dance is about more than steps — it’s about confidence, connection, and discovering (or continuing) a lifelong love of movement. We provide a supportive, inclusive environment where children, teens, and adults feel encouraged, challenged, and proud of their progress.

We offer a diverse range of dance styles and programs, delivered by passionate, experienced teachers who are committed to nurturing every dancer at every stage. Whether you’re a child taking your very first dance class, a teen building strong foundations, or an adult rediscovering your love of dance — quality training and positive growth are always our priority.

Our programs are designed to meet dancers where they are. From our youngest dancers, to recreational classes, performance opportunities, and Elite pathways, we support each dancer to work towards their personal best — at their own pace and in a way that feels right for them.

At YFDC, we believe in creating opportunities that align with individual goals, while fostering confidence, resilience, and joy. When you join our studio, you become part of a welcoming, like-minded community that celebrates effort, kindness, and growth — both on and off the dance floor.

YFDC Age Groups & Dance STYLES oFFERED

At YFDC Dance School, we offer a broad range of dance styles with classes designed to suit every stage of a dancer’s journey. Our programs are structured to support confidence, wellbeing, community, and growth through dance, whether students are dancing for fun, training more seriously, or returning to dance later in life.
Please note: Age groups are determined by the student’s age as of 1 January 2026.

Preschool Dance

Preschool Dance Combo Class: 2 – 5 years

  • Junior: 5 – 7 years
  • Intermediate: 8 – 12 years
  • Pre-Senior: 13 – 17 years
  • Adults: 18+

YFDC Elite Stream

  • Teen Elite: 12/U – 14/U

Please note: Age groups and class structures may be adjusted or combined depending on enrolment numbers.

At Your First Dance Co., we offer dance classes for all ages and experience levels. We understand that not every dancer wishes to pursue competition — many simply want to dance for fun, fitness, confidence, and connection.

Our Recreational (Non-Competition) classes are designed for dancers who love to move, learn, and express themselves in a supportive and relaxed environment. These classes focus on technique, musicality, coordination, and confidence, without the pressure of competitions or performances (unless otherwise advised).

All classes are taught by our passionate and experienced YFDC teachers, who are committed to nurturing a love of dance — whether it’s a child discovering dance for the first time, a teen building skills, or an adult returning to dance or finding it later in life.

Dancers are encouraged to set personal goals, build strong foundations, and grow at their own pace throughout the year. For those who may wish to progress further, these classes can also be a great pathway into our Elite/Performance Stream in the future.

Recreational Stream Costume Fee Levy

All Recreational Classes have a Costume Fee Levy of $50 for 1 Costume or $100.00 for multiple costumes per student applies to all recreational students participating in end-of-year concerts. This fee covers the cost of costumes for performances, ensuring every student has a costume appropriate for their class and dance style. The levy is invoiced with Term 3 fees and helps the studio provide quality, consistent costumes for all recreational performers.

Depending on age group and enrolments, Recreational classes may include:

  • Jazz
  • Tap
  • Contemporary / Lyrical
  • Hip Hop
  • Acro
  • JFH
  • Musical Theatre
  • Tap (Glenn Wood Tap) examinations are available, with all eligible dancers given the opportunity to participate within this program.
  • Ballet (RAD) examinations & classes will be introduced in later 2026.

The YFDC Elite / Performance Program is designed for dancers who are passionate, dedicated, and committed to training at an advanced level. Elite dancers receive focused guidance, mentoring, and structured training to develop both technically and artistically, in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Dancers in this program represent YFDC at troupe competitions, shows, and additional performance opportunities throughout the year, and may also choose to train as soloists, duos, or trios depending on readiness and commitment. Participation in Elite groups requires enrolment in specialised technique and ballet classes, which form the foundation of safe and effective training. Depending on age and level, dancers may also train in:

  • Jazz (all styles including commercial and Broadway)
  • Tap
  • Contemporary/lyrical
  • Hip hop
  • Musical theatre
  • Acro
  • Conditioning & Technique
  • JFH
  • Tap (Glenn Wood) and ballet (RAD) examinations are offered where appropriate.

Families and students should understand that the Elite program is a full-year commitment. Most competitions occur during school holidays and weekends. Dancers are expected to attend all scheduled classes, rehearsals, and any extra rehearsals to ensure the team can perform at their best. Withdrawing mid-year requires all fees to be paid, and accounts must be finalised up to the end of the current term before leaving.

Elite dancers are encouraged to take part in additional learning opportunities, including workshops, masterclasses, industry choreographers, and extension programs. Stretch & Conditioning and Acro classes are mandatory for all students participating in jazz, lyrical, or contemporary performance pieces to support technique, flexibility, and performance readiness.

Students in this program exemplify YFDC’s values of commitment, growth, teamwork, and community, and are supported every step of the way as they challenge themselves and thrive as performers.

Our adult classes are designed for people at all stages of their dance journey – whether you’re continuing your love of dance, picking it up again, or stepping into something new! Our Recreational classes focus on fun, movement, and fitness, while still teaching technique and choreography.

For those who want more, our Elite Option offers optional competition and performance opportunities, giving you the chance to challenge yourself, shine on stage, and continue growing your skills. At YFDC, we empower women to feel confident, strong, and inspired in every class.

Adults in 2026 may also train in:

  • Jazz
  • Tap
  • Contemporary/ Lyrical
  • Hip Hop
  • Musical Theatre
  • Conditioning & Technique
  • JFH
  • Heels
  • Twerk
  • Tap (Glenn Wood Tap) examinations are available, with all eligible dancers given the opportunity to participate within this program.
  • Ballet (RAD) examinations & classes will be introduced in later 2026.

Private lessons are available to support individual goals, competition preparation, or areas of personal development. Private lesson places are limited and, where needed, students may be placed on a waiting list.

Private lessons are a commitment in themselves and are most effective when linked to a clear goal — whether that be technical improvement, competition preparation, or performance readiness. We ask that families and students work with their teacher to set a specific goal at the start of private tuition to ensure progress is focused and meaningful. Placement in routines and stage performance is at the discretion of the teacher, who will determine when a student is ready to perform. Parents will be notified in advance of any performance opportunities.

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. If a lesson is cancelled within 24 hours, the full lesson fee applies. With sufficient notice, missed lessons can be rescheduled and made up at a mutually convenient time.

All choreography, routines, and creative content developed at YFDC remain the property of the studio. If a student leaves YFDC, any use or performance of YFDC choreography must be discussed with Anne Marie, who will make the final decision regarding permissions and rights.

YFDC Dance SCHOOL INFORMATION 2026

At Your First Dance Co., we love giving our students the opportunity to shine on stage! Each year, we hold a Mid-Year Concert, a Stage/Concert Rehearsal, and our End-of-Year Concert, where students can showcase what they’ve learned with professional sound and lighting. The Mid-Year Concert is performed in studio uniform, while the End-of-Year Concert features performance costumes, giving dancers the chance to experience a polished, professional stage presentation.

New for 2026: We’re introducing a Solo Showcase for our Soloists & those who want to perform individually & solo private lessons, and an End-of-Year Formal Gathering to celebrate the achievements of all our dancers.

A full calendar of events will be emailed by the end of Term 1 with specific dates.
Please let us know if your child or yourself is unable to participate in any event once dates are confirmed, as each student is part of the YFDC team.

All YFDC students are required to wear studio uniform, or black dance wear, to every class. We have a wide variety of studio uniform items for all age groups available to order online at yourfirstdanceco.com.au/uniform or from Flight Dance Wear in East Maitland.

If students wear alternative dance wear, it must be appropriate dance attire only (e.g., crops, bike shorts, tights, dance brand t-shirts, leotards) — no casual streetwear & skirts. For other classes, students may layer shorts, tights, or t-shirts over leotards if needed.

For sizing, please visit Flight Dance Wear in East Maitland and feel free to size up if needed. Studio tracksuits are also available to order.

Preschool Dance leotard tutu dresses can be purchased from Flight Dance Wear.

Elite students will also require an additional jersey as part of the Elite Competition Uniform, which is an additional cost.

Neat and tidy hair is compulsory for all classes.

Hair must be in a slicked-back ponytail, or plait. Long hair must always be in a bun or pulled up as best as possible. Feel free to wear a headband, make sure its black or turquoise.

If students come straight from school, we recommend bringing hair elastics, hair spray, and any other essentials to ensure their hairstyle is tidy. Well-groomed hair is essential for focus, safety, and correct technique in class.

A list of necessary dance shoe brand recommendations will be available upon your registration.

  • Hip Hop: Sneakers
  • Tap: Black tap shoes (Slicks)
  • Jazz: Black jazz shoes split sole
  • Contemporary/Lyrical : Barefoot or foot undies
  • Musical Theatre: Jazz shoes
  • Heels: Dance Heels (Heels of Queens, Vamp, Burju Recommended)
  • Twerk: Sneakers
